Its capital is the town of Moyahua de Estrada. It borders the municipality of Juchipila to the north, the municipality of Ixtlahuacán del Río (Jalisco) to the south; the municipalities of Nochistlán, Zacatecas, Yahualica, Jalisco, and Cuquío (Jalisco) to the east; and the municipality of Mezquital del Oro to the west. Moyahua comes from the Nahuatl word "Moyotl," which means "Mosquito," and "Ahuatl," which means "Holm Oak," which together means "Mosquito on the Holm Oak." Another name is "Moyotl," which means "Mosquito," and "Huan," which means "Possession," which translates as "Those who have mosquitoes."
