Paul Viscuse, MD, is a GU (genitourinary) oncologist that sees patients with cancers of the prostate, kidney, and bladder. He enjoys meeting with patients and having open, upfront conversations about their anxieties and emotions as they start on their cancer journey. Find out more at: https://uvahealth.com/findadoctor/pro... Transcript My name is Paul Viscuse, and I'm a medical oncologist at the University of Virginia. I see patients who have cancers involving the genitourinary system. This includes the prostate, the kidney, the bladder. And treatments may include chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, or other newer agents that are under investigation. Oncology specifically interested me because I think it's the best crossroads of fascinating science, but also incorporates the human nature of interacting with a patient through very difficult circumstances, and I thought that was the perfect blend for me. When I was getting my master's degree, I did my thesis in kidney cancer management. And shortly thereafter, my cousin, who I was very close to, was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer and went through many of the treatments that I discussed in my thesis. And it felt like fate was pulling me in the direction of oncology as a result. The greatest satisfaction I get in meeting patients is addressing their anxiety and fears when they first walk through the door. It's a long road for many folks, and it's some of the scariest times in their life. And I get the best joy when I can help them through that process. The reason people should come to UVA for their cancer care is UVA is uniquely positioned as comprehensive cancer center with a large catchment area that involves people living in urban settings, suburban settings, and rural settings, all of which need unique subspecialized cancer care, and they have that access here at UVA.
