As someone who's been teaching AP Physics for years, I’ve seen these types of questions show up time and time again. Whether you're prepping for AP Physics 1, Physics C: Mechanics, or even a college-level physics course, these fundamental topics will sharpen your problem-solving skills and boost your exam score. What You’ll Learn: Conservation of Energy Understand how energy is conserved in different scenarios. Recognizing various forms of energy—kinetic, gravitational potential, and spring potential—is crucial. For example, if a mass moves up a ramp, you can calculate the energy at different points to see how it transforms between kinetic and potential forms. Energy Lost Learn how to calculate energy loss, often framed as negative work. For instance, if a ball bounces to a lower height, find the difference in energy before and after the bounce to determine the energy lost during the collision. Graph Interpretation Get comfortable interpreting force-distance graphs. The area under the curve represents work done, which is equal to the change in kinetic energy. You’ll often need to calculate areas of triangles and rectangles to find total work. Work and Force Understand that work is dependent on the component of force parallel to the distance moved. For example, if you push a box up a ramp at an angle, you’ll need to consider the horizontal component of the force to find the correct work done.
