There are several areas that cartilage can be harvested from to use for a rhinoplasty. Dr. Michael Somenek, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Washington DC, explains the main areas that he uses to get cartilage from. For someone that has never had a rhinoplasty, the most common location is the nasal septum. This will usually provide sufficient amount of cartilage to use for grafting Purposes throughout the nose. For someone that has had a previous rhinoplasty or needs extra cartilage, the ear is the second location to retrieve cartilage from. This is performed through a well concealed incision on the back of the ear and the shape of the ear does not change. For people that have had multiple rhinoplasties or need a larger amount of cartilage, rib cartilage is used because this provides a robust piece of cartilage that can be used throughout the nose and restore the structure and function to the nose.
