For more information visit Dr. Wigoda's website at http://www.drwigoda.com/ South Florida plastic surgeon Dr. Wigoda explains what it takes for a surgeon to become board certified and how that differs from a board certified cosmetic surgeon. What does board certified mean? In order to become a plastic surgeon, a physician must complete four years in medical school, at least three years of a general surgery residency and at least two years of a plastic surgery residency. Fellowships are often done for additional training, all of these must be done at fully accredited programs. In order to become board-certified in plastic surgery, the plastic surgeon must graduate from an accredited plastic surgeon program and then pass a rigorous written exam. After being in practice for approximately one year the plastic surgeon, they must pass a three-day oral examination given by many of the national leaders of plastic surgery around the country. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board that is important to a plastic surgeon there are other boards which may use the words cosmetic surgery or facial plastic surgery these are not the same thing and should not be given the same weight as the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In fact, if someone claims to be a board-certified cosmetic surgeon they are not a plastic surgeon. Any doctor in Florida regardless of training can claim to be a board-certified cosmetic surgeon, they can legally perform surgery if they have board certification in any specialty. This is true even if they have absolutely no formal training in surgery or plastic surgery. Becoming a board-certified plastic surgeon takes a lot of work and a long time, which is why this is the minimum requirement you should be looking for when choosing a surgeon. If your surgeon is not board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Wigoda would highly recommend to find a surgeon that is. http://www.drwigoda.com/about/ Connect with Dr. Wigoda: Website: http://www.drwigoda.com Facebook: / drwigoda Twitter: / drwigoda Blog: http://blog.drwigoda.com
