Bietigheim-Bissingen has a sister city agreement with Kusatsu, a hot spring town in Japan. It comes from Erwin von Bälz, who was born in Bietigheim-Bissingen in 1849. He went to Tokyo Imperial University as a professor, and as a doctor-in-waiting for the emperor, he discovered sulfur-containing hot springs as a therapeutic method and made this town famous as a hot spring resort.
