(2 Apr 1998) T/I: 11:13:36 A French court on Thursday (2/4) sentenced former cabinet minister Maurice Papon to 10 years in jail for crimes against humanity over his role in the deportation of Jews during the Second World War. The prosecution had asked for a 20-year sentence against the 87-year-old defendant for his role in rounding up and deporting more than 1,500 Jews who were to die in Nazi death camps. Arno Klarsfeld, son of the Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld and a lawyer for Jewish plaintiffs in the trial, welcomed the verdict as a sentence against the French Vichy government that collaborated with the Germans. John Lemberger, Executive Director of "Amcha", the National Israeli Centre for the Holocaust, said Holocaust survivors would feel "vindicated" by the verdict. Papon returned to his home in the Paris suburbs within hours of the verdict, after his lawyers announced an appeal.
