Carbonate Replacement Deposits (CRDs) are some of the world's most prolific specimen producers in part because of the wide range of elements present and also because they generate open space for crystal growth at critical times both in their primary (hypogene) and secondary (supergene) development. Interestingly, specimens of individual species from CRDs tend to resemble each other, so learning to recognize them provides immediate information about the environment in which they grew. Worldwide examples familiar to collectors include Dalnegorsk, Yaoganxian, Trepca, Lavrion, Uchucchaqua, and Kelly....but Mexico is where the CRD family is best expressed and includes notable districts such as Ojuela, Santa Eulalia, Naica, Charcas, Los Lamentos, and San Pedro Corralitos among many others. Mexico's deposit and mineralogical abundance stems initially from her geologic evolution and later from an extended period of relative crustal stability and deep oxidation.
