Bullfighting, or corrida de toros, has been part of Spanish culture for centuries, tracing its roots back to Roman times and later evolving into the modern spectacle in the 18th century. Traditionally, it has been seen as an art form that combines ritual, bravery, and performance. In the arena, the spectacle is divided into stages where the matador faces the bull, first testing its strength and movements, then weakening it with picadors on horseback, and finally confronting it with a sword. The fight usually ends when the matador tries to deliver a final thrust to the bull’s heart with the sword, bringing it down. As a symbol of victory, the matador may be awarded one or both of the bull’s ears, which are cut off and presented as a trophy in front of the crowd. Today, however, bullfighting is more controversial than ever. While some Spaniards still defend it as heritage and tradition, others criticize it for animal cruelty. Certain regions, like Catalonia, have banned it, while in other areas it continues as a deeply symbolic event. Love it or oppose it, bullfighting remains one of the most debated aspects of Spain’s cultural identity.
