In this session, Dr. Connors focuses on optimal management of limited and advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma both at the time of initial presentation and at relapse, with special attention to integration of positron emission tomography scanning and appropriate timing of high-dose chemotherapy and hematologic stem cell transplantation. Most patients with Hodgkin lymphoma are cured with currently available techniques. It is, therefore, essential to strike a balance that ensures very high cure rates, while carefully minimizing toxicity, especially late, irreversible toxicity. In addition, patient-specific modifications are crucial for special populations such as the elderly, patients with major co-morbid conditions such as AIDS, and patients with relapsed disease.
