Tulini is one of the most significant festivals among the #sümi Naga community. It is a celebration of prosperity, new crops, friendship, kulakishi (mediation and #peace) and most importantly, a time to invite sons-in-law for a feast. During this festival, a man visiting his in-laws for the feast brings along his friends—those who are smart, strong, witty, and articulate, with excellent oratory skills. A pig is slaughtered in preparation for the feast, which is specially arranged for sons-in-law and prospective grooms. The manliness of the intended bridegroom is tested by serving him a generous portion of pork fat and rice beer on a large wooden plate called an Asukhu. His worthiness is judged by how much pork fat he can consume and how many mugs of rice liquor he can drink. In addition, he must compete in traditional sports to demonstrate his physical agility. If he manages to finish what is served, he is considered worthy and brave. If he fails, he is deemed unworthy and not eligible to become a son-in-law. His acceptance or rejection is determined through this traditional feast during Tulini. Through the performance of masculinity in Tulini, a groom is able to prove himself to his in-laws. He demonstrates the qualities expected of a man the role of a provider and protector for his wife and children. To read more, visit www.morungexpress.com
