Reversed Carnot Cycle Reversed Carnot Cycle is a combination of two words "Reversed" and "Carnot cycle", meaning a cycle in which the Carnot cycle is reversed. Heat engines work according to the natural direction of heat flow i.e. from high temperature to low temperature. while in refrigerators, heat flows from lower to higher temperature i.e. against the natural direction of heat flow. So, refrigerators can be called Reversed heat engines. Since for heat engines, the ideal cycle is the Carnot cycle. So, for refrigerators, the Carnot cycle will be reversed known as Reversed Carnot Cycle. Reversed Carnot Cycle is applicable for refrigerators, heat pumps, and air conditioners. The Carnot cycle is an ideal cycle that provides maximum thermal efficiency for two given temperature reservoirs. The Carnot cycle was proposed by French military engineer, Saadi Carnot in 1824. Carnot cycle is a totally reversible cycle that consists of two reversible isothermal and two isentropic processes. It has the maximum thermal efficiency for given temperature limits, and it serves as a standard against which actual power cycles can be compared. Since it is a reversible cycle, all four processes that comprise the Carnot cycle can be reversed. Reversing the cycle does also reverses the directions of any heat and work interactions. The result is a cycle that operates in the counterclockwise direction on a T-s diagram, which is called the reversed Carnot cycle. The application of Carnot law to the steam power plant and its TS diagram has been explained in great detail. Construction of refrigerator by amending steam power plant has been discussed as well.
