In May 2017, Paulist Fr. John Foley celebrates the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. In this video, in honor of his golden anniversary, he recalls how he met the Paulist Fathers, his seminary years and his ordination day. Fr. Foley was born in Dublin, Ireland, and moved with his family to New York City at age 7. He grew up on the West Side of Manhattan and in the Bronx. He is known as “Sean” to family and friends. He was ordained on May 1, 1967, by Archbishop John Maguire of the Archdiocese of New York at our mother church, the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, in New York City. Fr. Foley has served in a variety of roles throughout his long priesthood, including vice president of the Paulist Fathers from 2010 to 2014. He was pastor of Old St Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco; rector of the Church of Santa Susanna in Rome, Italy; pastor of Good Shepherd Church in New York City’s Inwood neighborhood; and associate pastor of St. Paul’s in New York City. He also spent time on our formation team and as director of the former Mt. Paul Retreat House Fr. Foley is a practicing canon lawyer and, today, assists priests during times of difficulty in their lives and ministries. He lives in Oak Ridge, NJ.
