Summer weather means tourists in the mountains, and the U.S. Forest Service and Park Rangers are advising caution around waterfalls. They say never climb on waterfalls or jump off of them. And never swim in waterfall pools because they could be deeper than you think with strong currents. Park officials say most visitors may not be aware of all the risks. "When visiting waterfalls in the national park, we ask the people to not climb up the waterfall to get close to it because the rocks get very slippery. Even though they don't look wet, they get wet from the mist of the waterfall and there are also algae that grow over them," says Park Ranger Sarah Holman. Brandon Meyer, from Raleigh, is checking out Soco Falls in Jackson County with his sons Max and Zach. He says, "This is the first time I brought the kids here so I don't know, I'll probably try it out myself and then go from there." Holman says wading in calm, shallow sections of the creek is not recommended, but not prohibited either. Caution, she says, is the key. "So maybe putting a toe in next to the creek would be okay. But making sure you're doing so in a very safe manner, always watching children that are getting around the water." Holman says wear sturdy shoes that won't come off. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. And Holman says a cell phone could come in handy, and she suggests visiting waterfalls with friends. "If something happens to one person the other person can go for help." The experts also advise carrying a map of the area.
