I woke up this morning with every intention of doing a scheduled tow at 10am. At 8am, I get a dispatch for a tow from Sarasota going to St Pete. Ok. No big deal. I’ll start the tow and hand it off to our Manatee River captain to take the rest of the way and then I’ll go do my scheduled tow. Well, about an hour after I got the boat in tow, the captain I was supposed to meet up with called me to say he got a job and will be tied up for a couple hours. Ok fine. I guess I’ll take this boat further north until he is freed up. About 90 min later he calls again to say he’s still tied up and won’t make it to our meeting spot on time, so I decided at that point I might as well just take this boat all the way to St Pete myself! That went all well and good until I was on my way back to my dock from St Pete when my dispatcher called to tell me there was a sailboat a couple of miles SW of Longboat Pass going even further into St Pete than I just was 😭 Needless to say, one of the major downsides to this job is not having a set schedule with start/end times. Here I was thinking I was just going to have a couple hour tow in the late morning, and instead, I ended up being on the boat for 16+ hours! AI-Generated Description: Let me paint you a picture: it’s a crisp morning, the birds are chirping, the coffee is almost hot enough to revive me, and I’ve got a simple job on the docket—a single tow. Easy day, right? WRONG. 🙃 What was supposed to be a quick 10am tow turned into a full-blown odyssey across the water, involving not one, not two, but three separate boats, several mid-water handoff attempts, a rapidly shrinking snack stash, and a growing suspicion that Neptune himself was messing with my schedule. The first tow goes fine… at first. Then, of course, there’s a change of plans. “Hey, can you do just one more boat before heading in?” Classic. Suddenly I’m chasing down a second vessel, while trying to coordinate with another captain who’s also juggling jobs like we’re in the Marine Circus. At this point, lunch is a distant memory and dinner is just a dream. But wait—plot twist! Just when I think I'm done and heading home to finally sit down and eat something not wrapped in aluminum foil, I get the call: “Hey, this sailboat way out yonder needs help—can you swing by?” And like the absolute sucker for boat drama that I am, I say yes. Fast-forward to 10:15 PM. I’m running on caffeine, beef jerky, and stubbornness. The sun is gone, my brain is fried, and I’m questioning every life choice that led me to this point—but at least you get a front-row seat to the madness. If you’ve ever wondered what boat towing looks like when the universe wants to see how far you’ll bend before you break, this video’s for you. Spoiler: I didn’t break—but I definitely swore a few times off camera.
