THE CIRCUS is a silent comedy drama film written by, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin. It premiered in New York City on January 6, 1928. The Tramp finds himself at a circus where he's promptly chased by a cop who think he's a pickpocket. Running into the Big top, he's an accidental sensation with his hilarious efforts to elude the police. The circus owner hires him, but discovers he can't be funny on purpose, so he exploits the Tramp by making him a crew member who just happens to always be in the show. The Tramp falls for the owner's acrobatic stepdaughter, who's abused by her dad. But then a dashing rival comes in and the Tramp feels tries to compete with him. The Academy Board gave Charles Chaplin an Honorary Oscar Award in 1929 for his work on this film. He became a worldwide icon and is considered to be one of the most pivotal stars of the early days of Hollywood. He is most recognized as his popular character the Little Tramp: the man with the toothbrush mustache, bowler hat, bamboo cane, and a funny walk. His career spanned more than 75 years. This film is in the public domain meaning it has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission. Corporations lobbied Congress to get U.S. copyright laws extended by 20 years, twice! Because of that, it allows published works to be under copyright for almost a century and corporations to squeeze every last ounce of profit from them even long after the profitability has past. It keeps people from enjoying art, which is the purpose of art.
