Today I want to address some of the frequently asked questions with functional medicine. So many people have heard of functional medicine or maybe your primary care doctor or other health professional have recommended you to this as an option. Today I want to address some of those questions. So the first thing to differentiate what's going on in functional medicine vs traditional medicine. So traditional medicine, you know how that works, you go in, you talk to your doctor, they do an exam they do some tests, you arrive at a diagnosis. Typically you will receive a prescription for some sort of medication and that's how this system works. In functional medicine you come in, you talk to the doctor, we are doing testing, but we are not only looking to identify a diagnosis, but we also want to understand what's going on beneath that. What are the root causes to the problems you are having. So that then requires us to do a further investigation, to do further testing, to understand the problem better. We are dealing more with root causes instead of just suggesting symptoms. This is one of the major differences between the two. Another common question is, what makes someone a functional medicine doctor? Its more of the philosophy that they are following. Its more their techniques, their methods, their procedures and how they are addressing it. A very simply way to differentiate are, well what things are you talking about with this doctor. Are you talking about your lifestyle, are you talking about your nutrition, are you talking about the kind of things that effect how the body naturally works or not. So if you are not having those conversations you are not really doing functional medicine. This is more of a traditional approach, what's your problem and how this medicine can help with the problem. So its really just a matter of what you are looking for in your healthcare. Another question we get frequently is, insurance. Will my insurance cover this or not. Well ok, this is a little bit tricky. Insurance is based on the traditional model. You go to the doctor you do some tests and analysis. You get some medication and potentially a surgery. This is what insurance understands. They will talk about health and wellness, but they aren't really geared for that. It really depends on your plan, your insurance plan and what they cover, I generally tell people not to expect coverage, but you never know based on the plan. Again, more often than not, you are not going to get coverage or you are not going to have all of your treatment covered with insurance. Other things we talk about would be just the method of how we are working with people. With functional medicine, its a much more involved approach, you have a much more involved relationship with that healthcare provider team because again, you have to go back to lifestyle. We are looking for these root causes, we are looking for these things that are pushing us closer to health or closer to disease and/or chronic health issues. So the diet is a big part of it, nutrition is a big part of it. Talk about the mindset are we stressed, are we sleeping, are we moving our body and getting exercise. So there are a lot of different variables that come into play here, but these are the kind of things that we are working with. So you have to change your lifestyle, change your habits, change what you are doing on a day to day to help your body work the way it should. We are trying to establish more function in the body itself. So that's another point that's different to this. Other things that make it different, would be more on how we are looking, looking at the body itself. In functional medicine we are looking to see how the all of the different systems relate to each other. For example, how our gut health and our immune system and how they effect how our brain is working, Looking at how the brain is working and how the gut is working and how the immune system and how these things can influence or hormone balance. We have to look at the body as a whole and not just in segmented, and looking at individual systems. So we are looking at everything as whole, we are trying to understand what's going on in your body as much as possible. So we can create a plan to adjust as many of those things as possible, but focusing on those t.
