Porto Airport (OPO) Walking Tour in 4K. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is Porto’s main international airport, located about 11 km from the city center. Porto Airport originally opened in 1945 and was first known as Pedras Rubras Airport, named after the local area where it is located. The name, meaning “red rocks”, is still commonly used by locals today. At the time, the airport was built on agricultural land, known for its fertile soil and cereal cultivation. In 1990, the airport was officially renamed Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, in honor of the former Portuguese Prime Minister who tragically died in a plane crash in 1980 while traveling to Porto. The airport is part of Portugal’s main aviation network and, in 1998, its civil aviation operations were concessioned to ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, which became responsible for its development and future infrastructure. A modern terminal, designed by the Portuguese architectural firm ICQ, was constructed between 2003 and 2006 and began operations in late 2006. Since then, Porto Airport has grown rapidly, welcoming over 10 million passengers in a single year for the first time in 2017, confirming its role as one of Portugal’s most important international gateways. The airport is directly connected to the city by Metro Line E (Purple Line). The metro station is located right in front of the terminal, making it one of the easiest airport connections in Europe. 🚇 Porto Metro – Useful Info: • Line: E (Purple Line) • Route: Porto Airport → Trindade • Travel time: approx. 30 minutes to the city center • Ticket price: around €2.85–€3.00 (Z4 ticket + Andante card) • From Trindade station, you can easily reach São Bento train station by metro or a short walk. The metro runs frequently throughout the day and is a convenient, affordable way to reach central Porto.
