In Auschwitz, among the yellow stars and red triangles, there was one group of prisoners who bewildered even the SS guards: they wore purple triangles and could have walked out free at any moment. All they had to do was sign a single document renouncing their faith. Most never did. This is the shocking and untold story of the Jehovah's Witnesses in the Nazi concentration camps—the prisoners who chose suffering over surrender, and whose resistance cost them everything. Between nineteen thirty three and nineteen forty five, over twelve thousand Jehovah's Witnesses were imprisoned in Nazi camps for refusing to salute Hitler, serve in the military, or betray their beliefs. Unlike any other prisoner group, they were offered freedom repeatedly—a simple signature could end their torment. Yet they became the most trusted prisoners in Auschwitz, working in SS homes, caring for Nazi children, and holding razors to their captors' throats each morning, all while refusing the one thing that mattered: obedience to the Reich. This is their forgotten story.
