Lights, Sirens, and loud cheering were the sights and sounds early Thursday afternoon as Fairfield welcomed back the home town team from the Little League World Series. A police escort from Greenwich to Southport and then a parade down the Post Road brought Fairfield American's bus to its final stop of the summer at the Sherman Green. The team was met by family, friends, politicians and fans, as the town of Fairfield showed up in numbers to honor the twelve year olds and their coaches. Fairfield American successfully completed the best season by any Fairfield team in the 66-year history of the Little League World Series, finishing in the top four in the country out of over 8,000 teams. Fairfield First Selectman, Michael Tetreau, who admitted he too watched every game, welcomed home the team. "You did a number of things," Tetreau said to the team. "You played some great baseball and that's what got you there, but more importantly you made Fairfield proud." Fairfield went 21-3 through the summer, falling only once before making it to Williamsport. This year marked the second time in three years that a team from Fairfield advanced with the Little League World Series representing New England (only eight teams go to Williamsport from the United States). Also honored were Fairfield's twelve year old girls' softball team and Fairfield National's eleven year old baseball team that both won the state title. "We're winners at every level," Tetreau said. "Fairfield's quickly becoming title town USA for Little League." Many other politicians at both the local and state levels spoke of how the team gave not only Fairfield and Connecticut, but New England as well, something to rally around and cheer for. They all echoed each other in compliments on how the team handled themselves both on and off the field, describing them as a great example for the next generation. Fairfield's manager Bill Meury told the crowd what he will remember the most of each player, including Will Lucas' no-hitter in Williamsport and Biagio Paoletta's two grand slams and nation leading 18 RBIs in regionals. Though the adventure that started three years ago as ten year olds has ended for the players, the memories they created for both themselves, their coaches, family and fans will never die and that is why they play the game.
