According to legend, Calamba got its name when Spaniards asked a local woman, “Cuál es el nombre de este lugar?” (What is the name of this place?) Not understanding Spanish, she replied “Calan ba?” (You want a pot?). In 1770, when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories, their Calamba hacienda was confiscated and later taken over by the Dominicans. This opened a new frontier that attracted the youth of Biñan. Among those lured over to play pioneer was Rizal's father, Francisco Mercado.
