The Monastery of Saint Catherine, which belonged to the Franciscan order, was founded in 1618 on the site of an ancient Gothic chapel with a cemetery hidden deep in the Little Carpathian forests, where, according to legend, Saint Catherine appeared to the young Count and hermit John Apponyi. The extensive Baroque monastery complex was gradually expanded and improved and belonged to the most important pilgrimage sites of the Archdiocese of Esztergom. Katarínka was a place of novitiate for the Franciscans and the destination of many pilgrimages of the common people from the surrounding area. In the seventeenth century, it was damaged several times during the estates' uprisings or Turkish invasions, but it was always repaired and life pulsed on. However, what the armies could not do, politics succeeded in doing; in July 1786, the monastery, along with hundreds of others, was abolished by a decree of Emperor Joseph II. The monks had to leave this place, the inventory was taken away and destroyed, and the monastery began to fall into disrepair and turn into ruins. Today, one can still see the well-preserved church ruins with a tower and the remains of one wing of the monastery building. The monastery lies off the main roads and important tourist trails, which on the one hand helped to preserve it in quite good condition (even after two hundred years of decay, the walls and the church tower stand), but on the other hand, the monastery remained hidden from the eyes and attention of most lovers of history and precious monuments. But every visitor who finds himself at these majestic ruins is enchanted by their beauty, dignity, and the special magical atmosphere radiated by the centuries-old stones in the majestic silence of the surrounding forest wilderness.
