The Stapes is the Smallest Bone in the human body. It is part of a chain of bones called the ossicles, which transmit sound from the eardrum to the inner ear. The Stapes is the last in this chain. It transmits sound into the inner ear via a footplate. Sometimes disease processes affect the Stapes bone which leads to hearing loss. One of the most common disease processes affecting the Stoma is Otosclerosis. In this, the movement of the stoma is obstructed by hardening of the tissues around the Stoma. This affects its movement, and sound transmission to the inner ear is reduced. This leads to a gradually increasing conductive deafness. There may be accompanying Tinnitus (extraneous sound in the ear). The surgical treatment of Stapes fixation is by removal of the Stapes and replacement by a prosthetic device which is of various designs and made out of different materials including Teflon, Titanium, Gold etc. The surgery can done under Local or General Anaesthesia. The advantage of Local anesthesia is that hearing improvement can be checked on the table. Though most often successful, Stapes surgery, in some cases, can cause complete irreversible loss of hearing in the operated ear. This must always be considered before opting for surgery. An alternative to Stapes surgery, in some cases, is the use of a hearing aid. However, though a Stapes surgery will stop the focus from spreading and is sometimes considered a 'cure' for the disease, a hearing aid will not prevent the progress of the disease. Sometimes the Otosclerotic focus can spread to the inner ear - a condition called Cochlear Otosclerosis - this can lead to a mixed hearing loss as well as also cause annoying Tinnitus.
