Traditionally, large flocks used to ramble through the Carpathian mountains of Ukraine, spending summers on wide alpine meadows while shepherds lived alongside them. But this lifestyle is dying out says sheep herder Mikhailo Bilak. He and his friend Mykola Yakbuk are some of the rare shepherds that still raise sheep in this way. Yakbuk, a generation younger, still feels passionately about this way of life despite the difficulties of the work. They trade months of herding back and forth between the two of them. But even on this remote mountain top, the war still looms. With increasing fears of mobilization growing across the country, even though, at 59, Bilak has nearly aged out of it, it remains a threat not only to him, but to this lifestyle. Bilak says if he’s mobilized, as the lead shepherd of this flock, his sheep will be packed for the slaughterhouse. One person couldn’t take care of his herd on their own.
