Examining the color of your trichomes will help you pinpoint the window of peak maturity so you can harvest when THC production and trichome development have reached their apex. Trichomes are the resin glands of the cannabis plant which contain THC, CBD and other active cannabinoids. It is commonly believed that trichomes evolved as a defense mechanism for cannabis plants to prevent damage from animals, insects, light degradation and fungal diseases. Derived from the Greek word trichoma, meaning “growth of hair,” trichomes are nearly microscopic, mushroom-like protrusions from the surface of the buds, fan leaves, and in lower numbers even on the stalk. While relatively complex, trichomes are comprised primarily of a stalk and a head. It is within the head that the actual production of cannabinoids like THC occurs. Towards the end of the cannabis flowering cycle, THC breaks down and turns into another chemical compound called Cannabinol, or CBN. Higher levels of CBN tend to provide a more narcotic or stoned feeling, while THC delivers a more euphoric and upbeat high. Around the fifth or sixth week of flowering you should start to inspect your buds daily to get a feel for trichomes. Trichomes form on the buds and small leaves and are comprised of a stalk with a resin head that looks like a post with a knob at the top. If your trichomes are clear it means that your plants are not fully mature. If you harvest your plants when the trichome are cloudy or milky, the cannabinoid profile will typically deliver an energetic and sativa-like high. If allowed to grow longer, trichomes will achieve an amber or brown color, meaning the cannabinoids will deliver a relaxed body high that’s associated with indica strains. Paying attention to your trichomes will help you to grow the perfect cannabis for your preferences. Music: http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-...
