Tajikistan | Badakhshan Ensemble | Maddoh

Maddoh (Ode). This video presents excerpts of a performance held by the Badakhshan Ensemble. This ensemble comes from Badakhshan, a remote area of South-eastern Tajikistan, among the high peaks of Pamir. Relative isolation contributed to keep original features to this music. Furthermore, most of the people of Badakhshan are Ismailite Shiites, unlike their Sunnite neighbours, and consider the Aga Khan as their spiritual guide (imâm). The musicians of the Badakhshan ensemble live in Khorog, the capital of the region with 40.000 inhabitants, and are professional musicians. In the video the musicians are playing a "maddoh" (ode), a devotional song meant to convey Baraka (spiritual energy). This maddoh, sung by Aqnazar Alovatov adapts a text by the great poet Mowlâna Jalâl-ud-Dîn Rûmî (1207-1273) on a traditional tune of Badakhshan. The video presents two brief excerpts of a long performance. The first one, almost at the beginning, in a slow tempo in which Alovatov sings accompanying himself with the rubâb, and the second at the end, in a faster and more intense style in which the whole ensemble joins in. The performance, was organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, in cooperation with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture – Music Initiative, and the Department of Filosofia e Beni Culturali of Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, and took place within the International Conference on Music, Arts, and Spirituality in Central Asia, scientific committee: Anna Contadini, Giovanni De Zorzi, Rachel Harris, Alexandre Papas. The Badakhshan Ensemble: Aqnazar Alovatov (voice and Pamir lute rubâb), Sahiba Davlatshaeva (voice and dance), Mukhtor Muborakadamov (Pamir lute setâr), Shodikhon Mabatkulov (frame drum daf), Khushbakht Niyozov (Afghan lute rabâb).
