Wir erkunden eines der berühmt-berüchtigten italienischen Manicomios, wie wir sie mit den Lost Place Tapes inzwischen schon ein paar Mal besucht haben. In der Stadt in der wir uns heute befinden hatte bereits im 19. Jahrhundert eine Nervenheilanstalt existiert, doch sie war irgendwann zu klein geworden und so errichtete man in den 1930er Jahren hier an dieser Stelle einen neuen Gebäudekomplex – eines der größten psychiatrischen Krankenhäuser Italiens bestehend aus insgesamt 20 Gebäuden. Berüchtigt ist es heute noch als Schauplatz eines Gemetzels am Ende des 2. Weltkriegs, das als das „Massaker der psychiatrischen Klinik“ in die Geschichtsbücher einging. 75 Gefangene wurden auf brutalste Art und Weise hingerichtet: mit Draht gefesselt, von Fahrzeugen mehrfach überrollt, aus den Fenstern geworfen oder kaltblütig erschossen. Das Manicomio blieb wie alle anderen des Landes bis ins Jahr 1978 als Nervenheilanstalt bestehen, bis auch hier Basaglias Gesetz in Kraft trat und die Klinik als solche geschlossen werden musste. Heute stehen alle Gebäude leer - mit einer Ausnahme: eines wird noch von einer Firma genutzt und deshalb drehen dort auch die Carabinieri immer wieder ihre Runden … We explore one of the notorious Italian manicomios, just as we've them visited a few times before with the Lost Place Tapes. In the city where we are today there had already been a mental hospital in the 19th century, but at some point it had become too small and so a new building complex was built here in the 1930s - one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Italy consisting of 20 buildings in total. It is still notorious today as the scene of a slaughter at the end of World War II, which went down in history as the "Massacre of the Psychiatric Clinic". 75 prisoners were executed in the most brutal manner: tied with wire, run over by vehicles several times, thrown out of windows or shot in cold blood. The Manicomio, like all others in the country, remained a mental hospital until 1978, when Basaglia's law came into force here too and the clinic as such had to be closed.
