(1 Mar 2020) Small groups of migrants on Sunday crossed the Evros River between Turkey and Greece on motorized canoes. The migrants made the journey near the village of Doyran, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of the Pazarkule border crossing, across the river that divides the two countries. The images came after clashes took place on the border on Saturday. The United Nations said on Sunday that at least 13,000 people were massed on Turkey's land border with Greece, after Turkey officially declared its western borders were open to migrants hoping to head into the European Union. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to open his country's borders with Europe made good on a longstanding threat to let refugees into the continent. His announcement marked a dramatic departure from the current policy and an apparent attempt to pressure Europe. Some groups of migrants who managed to cross the border were arrested by the Greek police and army. Greece announced it was sending police and army reinforcements to its land border and reinforcing controls along the sea border, where 52 coast guard and navy vessels were patrolling. Turkish Interior Minister Suleman Soylu tweeted that 76,385 refugees had left Turkey via Edirne, the province bordering Greece and Bulgaria as of Sunday morning. But there was no evidence to support his claim.
