After the defeat in World War I, Germany was stripped of its military power by the Treaty of Versailles. However, national resentment and the economic crisis created the perfect ground for the emergence of a new reconstruction project. During the 1920s, under the guise of compliance with the treaty, the country maintained secret contacts with other states, such as the Soviet Union, to train officers, test weapons, and keep German military expertise alive. Everything was done in the shadows, away from the eyes of the victorious Allies. With Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933, rearmament ceased to be clandestine and became a national priority. The Nazi regime promoted a war-oriented economy: factories began producing weapons, vehicles, and ammunition, while thousands of young men were recruited for the new army, the Wehrmacht. Propaganda played a key role, transforming the idea of sacrifice and obedience into patriotic virtues. In just five years, Germany went from being disarmed to possessing one of the most modern military forces in Europe. A decisive element was the cooperation of private industry. Companies like Krupp, IG Farben, and Messerschmitt received huge state contracts to develop tanks, aircraft, and explosives. In return, the state guaranteed them profits and political power. This link between the Nazi government and big business enabled massive and accelerated production, hidden under civilian or "reconstruction" programs. Thus, under the guise of economic progress, Germany transformed itself into a military power. Ultimately, the world failed to see the obvious. The Western powers, fearful of another conflict, tolerated the treaty violations, hoping to contain Hitler with diplomacy. But when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, it was too late. In less than a decade, the country had gone from collapse to military dominance, thanks to a mixture of deception, planning, and boundless ambition. This was the true "miracle" of German rearmament.
