The Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project is a major infrastructure initiative designed to modernize the city’s transport network and solve the chronic traffic congestion in the Central Business District (CBD). Here are the key notes on the project as of early 2026: 1. Project Overview & Funding Purpose: To alleviate traffic gridlock, improve pedestrian safety, and modernize Kampala's urban appearance. Funding: Primarily funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with a total estimated cost between $150 million and $200 million. Key Partners: Implemented by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and handed over to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for maintenance. 2. Phase 1 (Lot 1): Completed & Commissioned Phase 1 was officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in March 2025. Key features include: The Clock Tower Flyover: a 584-meter flyover designed to bypass the heavily congested Clock Tower intersection. Nsambya Underpass: A 360-meter, four-lane tunnel aimed at smoothing traffic flow between Nsambya and the city center. Pedestrian Bridges: Three major high-tech bridges—including the star-shaped Shoprite Bridge and the circular Clock Tower Bridge—to keep pedestrians safe from fast-moving vehicles. Road Expansion: Widening of Queen’s Way, Nsambya Road, and Mukwano Road to accommodate higher traffic volumes. 3. Phase 2 (Lot 2): Current Status (2025–2026) Construction for Phase 2 was scheduled to begin in June 2025. This phase focuses on the eastern side of the city center: Kitgum House Flyover: A new flyover at the Kitgum House junction (Jinja Road). Mukwano Road Expansion: Further widening to connect the Phase 1 flyover system to the upcoming Kampala–Jinja Expressway. Traffic Management Center: A "Smart City" control center was opened in late 2025 to monitor traffic lights and flow in real-time. 4. Major Benefits Time Savings: Expected to reduce travel time from the Africana Junction to the Clock Tower from over 20 minutes to just 5 minutes. Flood Mitigation: Includes a massive overhaul of the drainage system around the Clock Tower, which has historically been a "black spot" for flash flooding. Economic Impact: Estimated to save the Ugandan economy billions of shillings annually lost in fuel wastage and lost productivity due to traffic jams. 5. Challenges Vandalism: Since the 2025 opening, authorities have struggled with the theft of manhole covers, street lights, and copper cables. Street Vendors: KCCA continues to battle the occupation of new pedestrian walkways and bridges by illegal vendors. #KampalaFlyover #UgandaRoads #UNRA #SmartCityKampala #JICA #KampalaInfrastructure #UgandaProgress #ModernKampala #TrafficSolutionsUg #Uganda2026 #Uganda #Kampala #EastAfricaNews #UgandaDocumentary #PearlOfAfrica #UrbanDevelopment #BreakingNewsUganda Subscribe to the channel / @nzepeteroug
