Presider: Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki Choir: Pius XI TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Saint John. Glory to you o Lord. On that first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So, she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him." So, Peter and the other disciples went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. What have they done with our Jesus? Wasn't it enough that they crucified this good innocent man? Our rabbi, our teacher now must they desecrate his body? He was taken! Mary Magdala concluded as she confronted the empty tomb with eyes of grief and a sense of loss. The resurrection is the greatest moment in human history. Think of it. Jesus the son of God became man and out of love and obedience sacrificed himself on the cross so that our sins might be forgiven. Our first parents chose to disobey God in an attempt to try to be Gods. But remember, God is God. And we're not. Now, Jesus the son of God obeys his father and restores our damaged relationship at times, we forget that we are not merely flesh, but spirit. We were made for God and to be with him forever in eternity. St. Augustine in famous work the confessions stated you have been made you o Lord have made us for yourself. Lord God, our heart is restless until it rests in you. In my forty-seven years of being a priest and a bishop I have been at the bedside of parishioners, relatives and friends of those who have died. They knew that Jesus loved them and that his love would embrace them in the world to come. They like Peter and John are at the empty tomb professing their belief. Often, it's both a moment of tremendous sadness saying good-bye in this world to the one we loved but at the same time a statement of confidence and trust in God. Why? They are believers. The world has never emerged from the empty tomb. It places all its efforts in power, riches, or fame. It celebrates the material, the flesh, but these things do not lead us out of the tomb to life. Jesus affirmed that we are more than material, we are spiritual. The spirit calls us to acknowledge that Jesus' resurrection is the fulfillment of what he has state: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me even if he dies, will live." And everyone who believes in me will never die. We emerge from the tomb to proclaim a living Jesus who challenges us to live our lives as believers, confident that the love of God will raise us up. This is a blessed Easter a celebration through Jesus of God's life and love given to us. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. Amen.
