Source- PMID 37293870 Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) testing is a non-invasive way to measure the level of inflammation in the airways, specifically the type of inflammation associated with allergic or eosinophilic asthma. Nitric oxide is a gas produced by the cells in the bronchial tubes when they are inflamed; therefore, a higher concentration of this gas in your breath serves as a direct biomarker for the severity of your condition. Unlike traditional lung function tests that measure how much air you can push out, FeNO testing provides a “look inside” to see the underlying biological activity within the lungs. The test itself is quick and simple, requiring the patient to inhale deeply and then exhale slowly and steadily into a handheld sensor device for about ten seconds. To ensure accuracy, the device usually features a visual guide, such as a moving icon on a screen like the cloud you see here, to help the patient maintain a consistent flow rate. The results are measured in parts per billion (ppb). Lower scores generally suggest that the asthma is well-controlled or not of the eosinophilic variety, while higher scores indicate that the airways are inflamed and may require a change in medication. #feno #asthma #wheezy
