Types of Dementia - Not all dementia is Alzheimer’s! Hi, I’m Dr Knight, and in this video I explain: 👉 Why dementia isn’t one single condition👉 The four main types of dementia and their typical symptoms👉 Why symptoms often overlap👉 Common risk factors - and which ones we can reduce 📌 The four main types of dementia: 1️⃣ Alzheimer’s diseaseThe most common cause of dementia, affecting around two-thirds of people living with dementia. Caused by abnormal protein build-up (amyloid and tau) in the brain Common early symptoms include memory problems and difficulty planning or problem-solving Risk is influenced by age, genetics, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, exercise, head injury, and heart health 2️⃣ Vascular dementiaThe second most common type of dementia. Caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often due to strokes or damaged blood vessels Early symptoms commonly affect planning, decision-making, and organisation Often shows a step-wise decline, with sudden worsening after brain events Strongly linked to cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes 3️⃣ Dementia with Lewy bodies Caused by deposits of Lewy body proteins inside nerve cells Often associated with Parkinson’s disease Early symptoms may include problems with attention, movement, sleep, and hallucinations 4️⃣ Frontotemporal dementia (Pick’s disease) Less common More likely to affect people under 65 Early symptoms often involve changes in personality, behaviour, or language Caused by damage to the front and sides of the brain, linked to abnormal protein build-up 🔍 Mixed dementia Some people have more than one type of dementia at the same time, known as mixed dementia - for example, Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia together. 00:00 Memory Series 00:25 1. Alzheimer’s Dementia 01:08 Who’s at an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease? 02:23 2. Vascular Dementia 03:49 3.Dementia with Lewy bodies 04:31 4. Fronto-temporal Dementia 05:06 Summary ⭐ Key message: Most types of dementia are not inherited, and having a family member with dementia does not mean you will definitely develop it. While we can’t control everything, evidence shows we can reduce our risk, particularly by addressing lifestyle factors in mid-life (ages 40–60). It’s hard to fit everything about memory into one short video - so check out my more detailed explanations on YouTube! In the rest of this series, I’ll explain:🧩 Different types of dementia in more detail🏃 How to reduce your risk📘 What to do if you’re worried about your memory 🔗 Resources used: Alzheimer’s Society (UK) NHS website Age UK If you found this video helpful, please like, subscribe, and share to help improve understanding of dementia. 📲 Follow for more memory content Instagram: @drknightgettingonTikTok: @getting.on5 Youtube: • Your bones CHANGE during the MENOPAUSE - f... #dementia #alzheimers #brainhealth #memory #aging #dementiaawareness #healthtok #medtok #doctortok #healthreels #education #nhs #alzheimersawareness
