John Carmichael - Latin American Dances for alto saxophone and piano 1. Joropo (Venezuela / Colombia) 2. Obsession - Habanera (Havana) 3. Bahama Rhumba (The Caribbean) 4. Jongo (Brazil) Kyle Horch, alto saxophone Anya Fadina, piano Australian composer John Carmichael (b. 1930) grew up in Melbourne. He studied the piano at the Paris Conservatoire in the 1950s, afterward moving to London where he was encouraged in his composing by Arthur Benjamin. John Carmichael still lives in London, and continues to be active as a composer. His works have been performed by leading musicians: his "Phoenix Concerto" for flute was recorded by James Galway, his "Trumpet Concerto" was recorded by John Wallace, and his "Fetes Champetres" for clarinet and orchestra was recorded by Ian Scott. The "Latin American Dances" take inspiration from Carmichael's years as musical director of a Spanish dance company, also showing the influence of his mentor Arthur Benjamin and his love of French music, particularly Ravel. The first three movements of "Latin American Dances" are re-arrangements of pieces written earlier in John Carmichael's career, and the fourth movement was written especially for Kyle Horch - who gave the suite's first performance as a saxophone work in 2005 at the Purcell Room in London. This performance was recorded on 25th July 2021 as part of an online recital for MusicFest Aberystwyth.
