Size and Complexity: Prokaryotic cells are generally smaller and simpler compared to eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are typically between 1-10 micrometers in size, while eukaryotic cells can range from 10-100 micrometers. 2. Nucleus: Prokaryotic cells lack a defined nucleus, while eukaryotic cells have a well-defined nucleus that houses the genetic material (DNA). In prokaryotes, the DNA is present in a region called the nucleoid, which is not enclosed by a nuclear membrane. 3. Membrane-bound Organelles: Eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and more. These organelles perform specific functions within the cell. Prokaryotic cells, on the other hand, lack membrane-bound organelles. They do contain ribosomes, but they are free-floating rather than associated with a membrane. 4. DNA Organization: In eukaryotic cells, DNA is organized into multiple linear chromosomes, while prokaryotic cells have a single, circular chromosome. 5. Cell Division: Prokaryotic cells reproduce through a process called binary fission, where the DNA replicates and the cell divides into two identical daughter cells. Eukaryotic cells undergo mitosis or meiosis, which involves complex processes of chromosome replication, alignment, and segregation. 6. Presence of Cell Wall: Many prokaryotic cells have a cell wall outside the cell membrane, providing structural support and protection. Some eukaryotic cells, such as plant cells and fungi cells, also have cell walls, but they differ in composition from those of prokaryotes. 7. Presence of Cilia and Flagella: While some eukaryotic cells possess cilia or flagella, which are involved in cell motility, prokaryotic cells typically have simpler structures called flagella, which function differently. These are some of the fundamental differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It's important to note that there is significant diversity within each cell type, and exceptions to these general characteristics can be found.
