Why do we find it so hard to communicate with people who are seriously ill? When Geo was diagnosed with cancer he experienced in every aspect how awkward people behave when having to deal with a person who has a potentially fatal disease. How should the surroundings react? How should they communicate with a sick friend, husband or son? Geo's talk deals with this matter through his first hand experiences with the subject. Geo has worked professionally as a stand-up comedian since 2001. Besides stand-up he's worked a lot in television, radio, theatre, touched base with the big screen and released three books the latest of which in May 2013. Entitled 'Not for Fun' it describes his struggle against cancer and how humor became a weapon to beat the disease. At the end of September 2012, he received the great news that he once again had a clean bill of health. Since then Geo has used his experience with cancer in his work as a comedian. He believes cancer can actually be a laughing matter. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
