It’s about an hour away from Istanbul’s major ferry terminals like Kabataş, Eminönü, Kartal, or Bostancı. Private cars are not allowed on the island; transportation is mostly by bicycle, electric carts, or on foot. History During the Byzantine era, Büyükada served as a place of exile for princes and important figures—hence the name "Princes' Islands." In the Ottoman period and early Turkish Republic era, it became a summer retreat for wealthy Greek, Armenian, and Jewish communities. The island still preserves many historic wooden mansions, churches, and monasteries from that time. Main Attractions Aya Yorgi Monastery: Located at the highest point of the island. The uphill walk to this Greek Orthodox monastery is famous and a bit of a tradition for visitors. Historic Mansions: The island is filled with beautiful old wooden houses blending Ottoman and European architectural styles. Beaches and Private Clubs: Several beaches like Yörük Ali Beach and Prenses Koyu offer swimming and sunbathing opportunities. Clock Square (Saat Meydanı): The central area right after you arrive at the ferry terminal, full of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Churches and Synagogues: Such as the Aya Nikola Church and the Hesed Le Avraam Synagogue. Activities Cycling around the island is one of the most popular activities (the full island loop is around 10 km). Renting electric carts for a family tour. Enjoying traditional Turkish ice cream and shopping for souvenirs in local boutiques. Eating fresh seafood by the seaside at cozy cafes and restaurants. Interesting Facts The best time to visit Büyükada is during spring and summer when the weather is mild, and the island is lush and green. The island gets quite crowded on weekends, especially with locals escaping the city.
