Spanish Town is Jamaica's oldest continuously inhabited city, founded in 1534 by the Spanish as Villa de la Vega. It served as the capital for both the Spanish (1534-1655) and British colonial governments (1655-1872) before the capital was moved to Kingston. Despite its rich history, the city faces challenges like poverty and crime, though its historic center, now called Emancipation Square, remains a significant site with many important buildings from its colonial past. Spanish rule Established in 1534, Spanish Town was originally named Villa de la Vega. It was the center of Spanish power in Jamaica until the English captured the island in 1655. The town was renamed St. Jago de la Vega and remained the capital. British rule After the English takeover in 1655, it continued as the capital of the British colony of Jamaica. The capital was moved to Kingston in 1872, but Spanish Town remained an important administrative center. Emancipation Square, originally called the Old Parade Square, is the heart of the town and was the site where the abolition of slavery was officially proclaimed. Many historic buildings in the Georgian architectural style are located here, such as the House of Assembly and the former King's House. Modern Spanish Town The city today is a mix of historical grandeur and modern challenges, including poverty and high crime rates. The historic Emancipation Square has fallen into a state of neglect despite plans for preservation and redevelopment. Despite the challenges, Spanish Town is home to many notable people and remains an important part of Jamaica's cultural and political history. Enjoy the view.
