In this episode, Dr Thilo Beck, Lead Psychiatrist at Arud Centre for Addictions Medicine in Zurich, Switzerland talks to Austin Smith SDF’s Policy and Practice Officer about the Swiss Four Pillars Drug Policy, Opiate Replacement Therapy (ORT) and Heroin-Assisted Treatment (HAT). Swiss practice is based in a treatment approach alien to the Anglo-Saxon model adopted in Scotland. Collaborative work with patients decide the substance to be used in Opiate Replacement Therapy and the dose. Some patents have the choice of different long and short acting substances and their combination. This is a truly patient-centred approach that emerges from a value base that challenges much of Scotland’s provision. Dr Beck’s presentation at SDF’s conference 'Innovative Approaches to Reduce Drug Deaths and Harms' August 2016 can be viewed here: ...
