A program on the explains what vernal pools are, what you will find in them, why they matter and what you can do to conserve them. VT Coverts hosts Kevin Tolan of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies to share about vernal pools, the “coral reefs of the forest.” Vernal pools are small pockets of forest that flood from spring snowmelt and dry during midsummer. These seasonal wetlands are highly diverse, providing predator-free nurseries to breeding amphibians and sources of food and water to the surrounding ecosystem. Unfortunately, their small size and seasonality make these productive habitats vulnerable to threats like human development. Zoom on in to learn about what makes vernal pools special, the creatures found within, and how to do your part to protect these special places.
