Some Aquarium starter kits are better than others. The Walmart 55 gallon starter kit isn’t a bad deal but others may argue that. There are other kits on amazon too. Mind you we don’t have Petco in Canada. That makes me very sad. Our Petco is great at caring for their fish. I don’t know any fish store that doesn’t have fish die. Petco also gives you 30 days guarantee on their fish where other stores you get one week if that. I will keep shopping at Petco! Matter of fact I have a beautiful blue betta fish I bought there! I’ve had him for a very long time! My local PetCo takes pretty good care of their Bettas. Cups are clean and only very occasional sick or dead ones. They also discount Bettas that don't sell after about 1 week to help them get sold and into tanks. I felt bad that a "baby girl" didn't sell and just bought her last Sun. So far, doing well. I'm not sure on gender yet and I know babies are often mis-labeled as the wrong gender (understandable, it's difficult to tell when they're that little). Of my 9 Bettas, 3 are from PetCo and 6 are from a breeder. My PetCo does get some nice Bettas and they do take pretty good care of them. So, if someone sees a Betta they like in a pet store that appears to be taking good care of them - then I think they should buy him/her. Including some pictures of my Petco Bettas in the replies. PS - it's pronounced bet-ta, not bay-ta. So I work at petco and I would bet good money that the girl who was 'bugging you' was just one of the people on the floor. We have to walk around and talk to everyone we pass, we have to ask if they're doing okay, and still doing okay, and still doing okay even though we know they are. What do you do if your fish starts choking ???? My girl Lia was choking on a big pellet tonight I had the scariest 4 minutes ever I put her in a cup and shook it and she eventually spit it out. She was seriously choking you guys I could see her throat looked swollen. I'm glad shes okay! What a scary moment. I always soak my pellets for 10 mins or more before feeding them to my bettas..plus they wont expand anymore after your fish eats them, thus avoiding bloat from pellets and flakes too! Makes them softer and easier to digest also. I honestly love my bladder snails. As they are the size of a pin head when they hatch, you probably do have more than just him. While mine have reproduced, I’ve never found them a problem and Earl, my betta, likes to hunt them sometimes too. Glad you like him. Hell make lots of copies of himself, very quickly. Hes a bladder snail. The betta will pick some off. As long as you dont over feed you probably wont have a problem. More importantly just be sure to have a temp strip or another back up thermometer to keep this heater in check. I've seen SOOO many cheaper and even name brand heaters that do NOT have correct calibrated thermostats on their heaters to keep it on track with regard to proper consistent stable temperatures. Ty!! I’m a fairly new member and I just wanted to introduce myself and get some opinions! This is my new tank set up. It’s a 20 gallon which I know is abnormally large for a betta tank. I currently have two large snails, a moss ball, and my baby Uncle Iroh in here right now. I’m looking to add some more life to the tank but I’m not sure how. Uncle Iroh is a very calm boy and doesn’t seem to flare up often. I was thinking about getting some guppies? And possibly shrimp as well. I’m also super new to live plants so any advice for that is very welcome!
