This session focuses on unlocking the potential of tiered laboratory networks through laboratory capacity mapping. Mapping the capacity of the national laboratory network is a powerful tool to visualize where testing capacity is located and what population it covers. Triangulating the mapping data with national testing norms allows the identification of gaps in the implementation of minimal testing packages, which affects the advancement towards the targets of universal health coverage. When used smartly, the data can support the improvement of diagnostic services (including HIV and tuberculosis (TB) testing) towards more effective clinical and public health functions of the tiered laboratory network. More than 15 African countries have signed up to participate in the ASLM Laboratory Mapping (LabMap) initiative, in collaboration with Africa CDC, and are at different stages of data collection and use. LabMap data provides valuable information to country teams, funders and policy makers, and allows them to better coordinate, design and anticipate the needs of the tiered laboratory network. In this session, we share illustrative examples and preliminary results from Burkina Faso. Speaker: Dr Pascale Ondoa, Director of Science and New Initiatives, African Society for Laboratory Medicine
