Phantom traffic jams are demonstrated using twenty gizmo garden robot cars. Bilateral control is shown to completely suppress these traffic flow instabilities. In the “car following” model, the acceleration of each vehicle depends on the distance and relative velocity of the leading vehicle. In the “bilateral control” model, the acceleration of each vehicle depends on the distance and relative velocity of the leading and (counterintuitively) the following vehicle.
