Riding the Tail of the Dragon: Exploring America's Most Notorious Road 🏍️🛣️ Today, I'm excited to share my experience and thoughts on riding the infamous Tail of the Dragon. In this video, I'll delve into what makes the Tail of the Dragon unique, its location, safety concerns, and why I chose to make this my destination. The Tail of the Dragon is a legendary stretch of road nestled in the Appalachian Mountains near the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. It spans about 11 miles and is renowned for its challenging 318 curves. The road is a magnet for moto enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush with its tight turns and elevation changes and is considered by many to be one of the world's best motorcycling roads. According to TailoftheDragon.com, US129 is "America's number one motorcycle and sports car road." and it is considered "the destination" of choice for thousands of motorcycle and sports car fans throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Situated in Deal's Gap, the Tail of the Dragon attracts a staggering number of cars and motorcycles each year. You will also find a mix of riders, from beginners to seasoned professionals, taking on the challenge to tame the dragon. With demanding twists and turns, no shoulders, and steep roadside cliffs, the road has earned a reputation as America's most dangerous. The Tail of the Dragon sees its fair share of accidents. The road's reputation for danger is well-founded, with a notable number of motorcycle accidents occurring annually. The Asheville Citizen Times reported that: According to Tennessee's Integrated Traffic Analysis Network, in 2018, there were 83 traffic crashes on the Tail of the Dragon, 75% of which involved a motorcycle. Three of those motorcyclists died. The numbers for 2019 aren't much better: 93 crashes, 67% involving motorcycle drivers. Four people died, three of whom were motorcyclists. I made the mistake of watching Max Wrist's videos before my trip. This is a mistake because Max and his friends treat the road like a race course and inevitably crash. Dan Dan the Fireman, from Motorcycle Training Concepts, a motorcycle instructor and safety expert, has called for Max Wrist to be taken off the roads. He says that the only benefit of the Max Wrist videos is to show you what not to do. If anything, Max Wrist demonstrates that the road itself is not the danger; it is the rider. The debate over the best road spans the vast landscape of the country, from iconic touring routes like the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Pacific Coast Highway to more technical challenges such as Montana and Wyoming's Beartooth Pass or the 3 Sisters in Texas, a 100-mile epic ride. Regardless of the website you consult, the Tail of the Dragon consistently ranks among the top 5. On her channel GOT2GO, Lea Rieck dismisses the Dragon, likening it to any mountain road in the Alps. In my opinion, that's high praise for a road in eastern North America! Observing YouTube videos reveals the Tail's popularity among sport bike and supermoto enthusiasts. However, in the USA, Harley Davidson Motorcycles dominate the road. Remember, US129 is a public roadway, not a race track, so whatever you're riding, it's the right bike for the Tail. During my ride on a weekday morning in May, the road was teeming with middle-aged bikers seeking a fantastic ride. Despite being overtaken by some speed demons on naked sport bikes, I advocate staying within your comfort zone for a safe and enjoyable experience. Don't be a reckless rider; just ride within your limits, and you'll have a blast! For the record, my Tiger performed admirably, utilizing only a fraction of its 140 horsepower to comply with the 30mph speed limit. Chad Hargis, a commenter on my channel, noted, "Part of the fun of the dragon is 'the show'-all the bikes and squids wheelieing up the hill." The road's popularity, however, makes it challenging to secure a clean run. There's no denying that the Tail of the Dragon stands as one of the world's premier motorcycling roads, attracting 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts annually. Listen to the evocative names of corners like Wheelie Hell, Gravity Cavity, Beginner's End, and Bust Bend, and you'll understand why it's a journey worth taking. I didn't tackle the Tail to showcase my skills or flirt with danger; I did it because I heard it promised a lot of fun. ⬇️⬇️🏍️ Explore Exhilarating Motorcycle Journeys with Tiger Coward! 🌍⬇️⬇️ 📘 Facebook: / tiger.coward 📸 Instagram: / tigercoward Join us as we ride into exciting landscapes and share the joy of motorcycle journeys! 🏞️ Don't miss out on the adrenaline, scenic views, and the camaraderie.
