I recently saw a Fender USA Jazzmaster body on eBay that was in a rare finish of Sky Burst Metallic. It was a Tri-burst finish but in blue and silver. It was just…beautiful. I purchased it and then purchased the neck and the other parts that I needed for my build. I was committed. The seller though with an established presence on both eBay and Reverb then emailed me and refunded my money. The item had been sold on another platform and they did not take it down by mistake. I hate this and it has happened to me more times than I care to say. I wish there was an automated way sellers could keep an inventory and when it sells on one platform it is removed from all at the same time, so this mistake does not happen. I then started looking for another body so the project could go forward. I found an American Professional Jazzmaster body in Mystic Surf for $499. I went ahead and ordered it. Although it was not as pretty as the first body I purchased, it was none the less a nice-looking color and body and would make a nice build. I was not really building a guitar at the level I normally do. I have about six major components and was assembling them. The idea behind the build was to build a traditional Jazzmaster with both Jazzmaster circuits and to incorporate all US made Fender parts. The one item I deviated on from Fender was I purchased a 920D Custom Jazzmaster Vintage Wiring Harness for $195 on Reverb. This is the last complete harness I plan on buying. Next Jazzmaster or Jaguar build I plan on building the harness from scratch. If you ever want to feel inadequate about how you build wiring harnesses just compare your work side by side with 920D. This is not a sponsored video – this is my opinion – the opinion of someone who has built probably around 1000 different guitar wiring harnesses over the years. Just the neatness of the wiring in their harnesses makes it look like it was created in some precision robotic shop. My harnesses look like my hair when I first roll out of bed in the morning. Who am I kidding? My harnesses look like my hair pretty much any time of day. I am at that age where I think that using a hairbrush or comb is an optional step in prepping for the day. I emailed 920d the following: I looked at your website for a description of how you build your harnesses. I wanted to know whether they were built one by one by human hands or were they built in some robotic fashion? The reason I ask is the harnesses are just so damn neat looking in how the wiring is run so much so that it looks as though it was done by a precision-based machine. Here is the answer: Hey Jamie, Our harnesses are built by hand. Glad to hear you like them! Our techs work hard to make a quality product. Many thanks, Bennett Heller Director Next, I chose the following items for the build. Fender Pure Vintage '65 Jazzmaster Pickups $162 Fender American Performer Jazzmaster NECK USA 9.5" Radius 22 Fret Rosewood $409 Neck- Modern "C" Shape Tinted Maple w/ Rosewood Fingerboard 9.5" Radius (241 mm) 22 JUMBO Frets 25.5" (648 mm) Scale Length 1.685" (42.8 mm) Width at Nut Satin Finish Fender Pickguard for American Vintage Jazzmaster Guitar. $27 Fender Classic Gear Tunes - $49 Total for all of the items in the build are $1341. All of the components are brand new. I was not trying to save money. I just wanted to do the project. A new version of the guitar would have cost me around $1899. A used version depending upon condition would have cost between $1030 and $1471. Observations Everything just fit perfectly. I almost installed a shim not knowing it would be needed and held off. I was surprised after assembly that it was not needed at all. The rosewood on the fretboard is really dark. The mint pickguard goes well with the Mystic Surf color. The combination of the 920d wiring harness and the Fender Pure Vintage '65 Jazzmaster Pickups makes for a very smooth sounding guitar with what surprises me as being a very useable Rhythm circuit. Usually, the rhythm circuit to me is a little muddy and has not top end. That is not the case in this guitar.
