The Parlophone Orchestra, conducted by Julian Jones, plays 'Stageland,' a selection of songs published by B. Feldman & Co., recorded in London c. March 1924. Julian Jones (1883-31 December 1930) had been appointed as Beka's Musical Director by 1907 and by January 1908 he was also acting as Musical Director of British Homophone. At that stage, Jones was Principal Violin (and Deputy Conductor) of the Alhambra Orchestra, where the Principal Conductor was George W. Byng, later to become Musical Director for British Edison, British Zonophone (in mid-1915) and finally The Gramophone Company. In 1912, Jones left the Alhambra and became Conductor at the London Hippodrome at the beginning of June of that year, remaining there until 1924. This is the latest example I have of a recording conducted by Jones. I transferred it from a battered and worn copy of Parlophone E 5132. Despite the obvious problems with the disc, the music is well-conducted and well-played by an orchestra that has a sound very much like a theatre orchestra of the time: so much so that I wonder if we are in fact listening here to the London Hippodrome Orchestra.
