It also marks a year since NowThis staff member Bianca Clendenin’s grandmother died. Bianca’s grandmother Janet was 24 years old when the Civil Rights Acts passed, and for many years she was a maid for wealthy white New Yorkers who treated her like a second-class citizen. Her life was bookended with racial terror, which has taken many forms in America over the years. Lynching is probably the biggest example of hate-motivated violence in American history. It became more prominent after the Civil War as a “tool” to unofficially and unjustly terrorize and murder Black people, especially in the South. Another major civil rights obscenity happened with the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing in the 60s, where young Black girls lost their lives. Violence against Black individuals happened sporadically for years after, ranging from gang beatings to murders and other acts of violence. Then, in the ‘90s, police brutality against people of color began to gain prominence. Today, there has been a resurgence of hate crimes, as white supremacists become more emboldened and empowered. According to the FBI, in 2016 there was more than 6,000 reported incidents of hate crimes, up from more than 5,800 the year before. The Charlottesville riots were a harsh reminder that hate is still alive in America, and that more action needs to be taken against people who promote/practice it.
