The Los Roques archipelago is a paradise destination that has become a real bargain for internationa

(30 Jun 2015) The Los Roques archipelago is a paradise destination that has become a real bargain for international tourists due to the devaluation of the Venezuelan currency. The crystal-like waters of the chain of islands 80 miles, (128 kilometres) north of the city of La Guaira, are popular for water sports and swimming. Tanli Yang, a Chinese national living in Brazil, travelled recently to Los Roques and was surprised by how little she paid for a scuba diving session with an instructor. While the affordability of visiting places like Los Roques may create a demand in the medium term, it's not good for the long-term development of the country's tourism industry, said Bernhard Weissenbach, President of Miranda State Tourism Corporation. Back in February, the government triggered a series of adjustments to the exchange control model to partially relax the process through a third market, known as marginal currency system. The government sells dollars for the most crucial imports, such as food and raw materials, at rates of 6.3 bolivars for the dollar and 12 bolivars in the economic sector. The third exchange rate is about 200 bolivars to the dollar, but on the black market the bolivar is only worth about half that, meaning bargain prices for goods and services for many tourists. The new currency mechanism has generated sharp criticism due to the limited supply of foreign exchange. Many economists blame price and currency controls for causing the economic troubles plaguing Venezuela at a time when falling oil prices are battering its revenues.
