There are TONS of different types of flies out there! 😳 With everything from dries and emergers, to nymphs and streamers, how can you tell fly types apart, especially when you’re just starting out? Today, we’ll look at the key differences between the three main types of flies - dry flies, nymphs, and emergers. A dry fly has hackle, and is designed to float. It can often be made out of foam. A nymph is designed to sink, and often have bead heads to help them do just that. They might have hackle, but if they do, it’s just a tiny bit designed to add movement to the fly. An emerger is designed to sit low in the surface, to mimic bugs that are just starting to hatch. They’ll have thin, wispy bodies, scraggly tails, and if they have any hackle, it’s either thin or cut flush with the body. Remember, these flies are designed to mimic real bugs! So the more you know about bugs and fly selection, the more fish you’ll put in the net. P.S. If you’re interested in learning about the various aquatic insects and how to choose the right fly from your box, we just launched our new Fly Selection Masterclass video series.
