Shamakhi (or Shamakhi) is the ancient capital of Azerbaijan, a city located in the southern part of the Greater Caucasus, on the Baku-Tbilisi highway, 122 kilometers from Baku and 72 kilometers to the north-east of the Kurdamir railway station. Shemakha lies at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. As of 2009, 43,300 people live in the city. The area in which the city is located is full of mountain forests and meadows. Most of the area is a resort area with many springs of mountain water, which makes the city interesting from a tourist point of view and attracts investments here. In connection with the reduced dustiness of the atmosphere and the prevailing number of clear days in the year in 1957, 22 kilometers from the city, the famous Shemakha Astrophysical Observatory was built. Shemakha has always been a city that has been known since ancient times as one of the centers of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan. Here and today the carpet-weaving factory functions. In addition, the climate favorable for viticulture makes it possible to develop the wine industry; Currently, a complete reconstruction of the winery is expected. As a result of the adoption of the "State Program for the Development of the Regions of Azerbaijan", new production facilities were opened in Shemakha: the joint Iran-Azerbaijan car assembly company Azsamand, a factory for the production of electronic household appliances. Not so long ago, the Baku-Shemakha automobile road, 112 km long, was completely reconstructed. Shemakha was once praised by A. Pushkin (Shemahanskaya queen in "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel") and G. Gagarin ("Shemakhan Bayadere", "Woman from Shemakha", "Dancer Nisa"). Such sympathy for Shamakhi women is due to the fact that their dances were distinguished for their originality.
